Sound Familiar?

An underactive thyroid has a pattern.

It rarely shows up overnight. It creeps in over months and gets written off as stress, aging, or a busy season. If several of these describe your last six months, it's worth a simple thyroid test.

Clinical Guide

What to know about managing hypothyroidism online.

Online thyroid care is designed for ongoing management of straightforward hypothyroidism. Vyta.co screens for red flags, reviews your labs and history, and prescribes only when a Florida-licensed physician determines treatment is appropriate.

Medically reviewed by Dr. John Venzor, Florida-licensed physician. Last reviewed June 20, 2026. This section is educational and does not replace individualized medical advice.

What is hypothyroidism?

Hypothyroidism means the thyroid gland is not making enough thyroid hormone to keep the body running at a normal pace. It is common, especially as people get older and in those with a family history of thyroid disease. The most common cause is Hashimoto's thyroiditis, an autoimmune condition in which the body's own immune system gradually slows the thyroid. Typical symptoms include fatigue, weight gain, feeling cold, dry skin, constipation, and brain fog or low mood. Because these symptoms are nonspecific, the diagnosis is confirmed with a blood test — usually TSH, sometimes with Free T4. Once diagnosed, hypothyroidism is very treatable with a daily thyroid hormone tablet, and most people feel substantially better once their levels are in range.

How online thyroid care works

You complete a secure online intake describing your diagnosis, current medication and dose, most recent labs, symptoms, interacting medications, and pharmacy preference. A licensed physician reviews the information and may follow up if more detail is needed. If you have established, stable hypothyroidism with recent labs, the clinician can send a levothyroxine prescription to your pharmacy. If your labs are not current, Start & Confirm includes a TSH so the clinician can review your levels before prescribing.

Vyta.co manages straightforward hypothyroidism — it does not work up complex or undifferentiated thyroid disease. If your answers suggest hyperthyroidism, a nodule or mass, thyroid cancer, pregnancy, or any picture that needs specialist-level care, the clinician will refer you for in-person evaluation at no charge.

Management, not diagnosis Clinician-reviewed Labs included

When online thyroid care is appropriate

Telehealth may be appropriate for adults with established, stable hypothyroidism who need ongoing levothyroxine refills and routine monitoring — or for symptomatic adults whose labs confirm straightforward, uncomplicated hypothyroidism.

Because thyroid symptoms overlap with other conditions and only labs confirm the diagnosis, your clinician reviews your history and TSH before deciding whether treatment is clinically appropriate.

When to see a doctor in person

Online management is not right for every thyroid situation. Seek in-person care if any of the following apply.

  • Pregnancy, or planning pregnancy within the next six months
  • A history of thyroid cancer, or thyroid nodules or masses
  • Hyperthyroidism or Graves' disease, or symptoms of an overactive thyroid (racing heart, tremor, unexplained weight loss)

Levothyroxine: how treatment works

Levothyroxine is a synthetic form of the thyroid hormone T4 and is the standard first-line treatment for hypothyroidism. It is taken once daily, ideally on an empty stomach 30 to 60 minutes before breakfast, because food and certain supplements affect absorption. Calcium, iron, antacids, and proton-pump inhibitors (PPIs) should be separated from your dose by several hours. The clinician starts conservatively and adjusts based on your symptoms and labs, rechecking your TSH about 6 to 8 weeks after any dose change.

Take levothyroxine consistently and tell your clinician about new medications or supplements, since they can change how much you absorb. If you have symptoms of too much thyroid hormone — a racing heart, tremor, trouble sleeping, or unexplained weight loss — let your clinician know, as your dose may need to come down. Your clinician chooses the dose and monitoring plan based on your individual situation.

What causes hypothyroidism?

The most common cause is Hashimoto's thyroiditis, an autoimmune condition. Other causes include prior thyroid surgery, radioactive iodine treatment, certain medications, and, less commonly, problems with the pituitary gland. Risk is higher with a family history of thyroid or autoimmune disease and with older age. Hypothyroidism is usually a lifelong condition, which is why steady refills and periodic monitoring matter more than a one-time fix.

Labs & monitoring

TSH is the main test used to diagnose hypothyroidism and to guide dosing, sometimes alongside Free T4. Once your dose is stable, most adults need a TSH check about once a year — the American Thyroid Association suggests every 6 to 12 months once stable. After any dose change, your clinician rechecks sooner, usually in 6 to 8 weeks. The membership includes one monitoring TSH per year; any additional labs are billed at cost.

Why this matters in Florida

Florida has one of the oldest populations in the country: about 21.8% of residents are 65 or older (US Census QuickFacts). Because the risk of hypothyroidism climbs with age, a large share of Floridians are already on levothyroxine or will need it. For a stable patient, thyroid care is mostly refills and an annual TSH check — routine work that does not require sitting in a waiting room, which is exactly what online management is built for.

Florida is also the country's seasonal-resident capital. The number of part-year residents swells to roughly 971,000 on an average January day and falls to about 114,000 by late summer, according to the University of Florida's Bureau of Economic and Business Research (BEBR). Snowbirds who spend their winters here still need their thyroid medication filled locally, and a prescription written by a doctor back home does not always transfer cleanly to a Florida pharmacy mid-season. A Florida-licensed physician managing your refills means your levothyroxine is ready at a pharmacy near your winter address.

Retirement relocation is the other side of the same story. Many people move to Florida later in life and leave behind the endocrinologist or primary-care doctor who managed their thyroid for years. Re-establishing with a new specialist can mean months on a waitlist while refills lapse. Online care closes that gap: a Florida-licensed physician reviews your history and recent labs, confirms your dose, and keeps your levothyroxine coming without an interruption.

Is online thyroid care legal in Florida?

Yes. Under Florida Statutes 456.47, a Florida-licensed telehealth provider may evaluate and treat a patient without a prior in-person visit, provided the online evaluation is sufficient to diagnose and treat safely, and the statute expressly allows the provider and patient to be in separate locations. Because levothyroxine is a non-controlled medication, a Florida-licensed physician can review your thyroid history and labs and send your prescription to a Florida pharmacy electronically. The same statute holds telehealth to the identical standard of care as an in-person visit, which is why anything beyond straightforward, stable hypothyroidism is referred for hands-on evaluation instead.

As long as you are physically in Florida when you complete your intake, a Florida-licensed physician can review your history and recent labs and send your levothyroxine to a pharmacy near your Florida address. That keeps your thyroid medication going through the winter without transferring a prescription from your home state, and you can pick back up with your regular doctor when you head north again.

Anything more complex than routine, stable hypothyroidism is referred for in-person care at no charge.
