What is a urinary tract infection (UTI)?
A urinary tract infection (UTI) is a bacterial infection of the urinary system, most commonly affecting the bladder — a condition called cystitis. Typical symptoms include burning during urination, frequent or urgent urination, cloudy or strong-smelling urine, lower abdominal pressure, and occasionally blood in the urine. UTIs are far more common in women than in men, largely due to anatomy. Most uncomplicated lower UTIs in otherwise healthy adults are treated with a short course of oral antibiotics, typically lasting 3 to 7 days depending on the medication.
Is online UTI treatment legal in Illinois?
Yes. Under the Illinois Medical Practice Act of 1987 (225 ILCS 60), a clinician who is licensed in Illinois may establish a valid clinician-patient relationship and prescribe non-controlled medications, including the first-line antibiotics used for an uncomplicated UTI, through telehealth. Vyta works only with Illinois-licensed clinicians, who review each Illinois patient's intake before deciding whether treatment is appropriate.
Antibiotics for a UTI are not controlled substances, so they can be prescribed via telehealth when a clinician determines it is clinically appropriate. There is no separate in-person visit requirement for this kind of non-controlled prescribing by an Illinois-licensed clinician.

When online UTI treatment is appropriate

When to see a doctor in person
Online care is not right for every urinary symptom. Seek urgent in-person care if you have signs the infection may have moved beyond the bladder.

- Pregnancy, male urinary symptoms, or symptoms after recent urinary tract procedure
- Recurrent UTIs, symptoms that do not improve after antibiotics, or concern for an STI or vaginal infection
Antibiotics commonly prescribed for UTIs
For uncomplicated bladder infections, clinicians commonly consider nitrofurantoin, trimethoprim-sulfamethoxazole, or cephalexin. Nitrofurantoin concentrates in the urine and is often used for bladder infections. Trimethoprim-sulfamethoxazole, also called Bactrim, interferes with bacterial folate production but may not be right in areas with higher resistance or for people with sulfa allergies. Cephalexin is a cephalosporin antibiotic that disrupts bacterial cell-wall formation and may be used when appropriate based on history and allergies.
Typical treatment courses are short, often about 3 to 7 days depending on the antibiotic and patient factors. Common side effects can include nausea, diarrhea, headache, rash, or yeast infection. Your clinician chooses the medication and duration based on your symptoms, allergies, kidney history, pregnancy status, prior antibiotic use, and local resistance concerns.
What causes a UTI?
Most UTIs happen when bacteria enter the urethra and travel into the bladder. E. coli, a bacterium that normally lives in the intestinal tract, is a common cause. Anatomy, sexual activity, spermicide use, menopause-related changes, dehydration, and a history of prior UTIs can increase risk. Drinking water and urinating after sex may help reduce risk, but antibiotics are usually needed once a bacterial UTI is established.
What if UTIs keep coming back?
Recurrent UTIs usually mean two or more infections in six months or three or more in a year. Repeated infections deserve a fuller evaluation because symptoms may need urine culture, resistance testing, prevention planning, or evaluation for other causes.
