What causes acute nausea and vomiting?

Is online nausea treatment legal in Michigan?
Yes. Michigan law lets licensed clinicians provide care and prescribe non-controlled medications through telehealth under the Michigan Public Health Code (MCL 333.16284). That includes establishing a provider-patient relationship online. Ondansetron (generic Zofran), the first-line anti-nausea medication, is not a controlled substance, so a Michigan-licensed physician can prescribe it through telehealth when it is clinically appropriate after reviewing your symptoms and history. Controlled substances still require an in-person visit.
When online nausea treatment is appropriate
Telehealth may be appropriate for adults with recent, uncomplicated nausea or vomiting — for example, symptoms from a stomach bug, something you ate, or motion — that started within the last few days and are not accompanied by red-flag symptoms.
Because nausea and vomiting can occasionally signal something more serious, your clinician reviews the full intake before deciding whether an anti-nausea medication is clinically appropriate.
When to see a doctor in person
Online care is not right for every cause of nausea. Seek in-person or emergency care if any of the following apply.
- Blood in your vomit or stool, coffee-ground vomit, or black or tarry stools
- Severe or constant abdominal pain, chest pain, trouble breathing, a severe headache, stiff neck, or confusion
- Signs of severe dehydration, pregnancy, or symptoms lasting more than a few days
First-line treatment: ondansetron
For short-lived, uncomplicated nausea and vomiting, clinicians commonly consider ondansetron (generic Zofran), a well-established antiemetic. It is often prescribed as a 4 mg orally disintegrating tablet that dissolves on the tongue, taken every 8 hours as needed for nausea — useful when keeping pills or fluids down is hard. The goal is short-term symptom relief while a self-limited illness resolves and you rehydrate.
Ondansetron is generally well tolerated; the most common side effects are headache, constipation, and tiredness. Because it can affect the heart's QT interval, it may not be appropriate for people with a personal or family history of long QT or heart-rhythm disorders, or those taking certain other QT-prolonging medications — which is why the intake screens for these. Your clinician chooses the medication and quantity based on your symptoms, history, and allergies.
How to stay hydrated
Dehydration is the main concern with vomiting and diarrhea. Take small, frequent sips of clear fluids or an oral rehydration solution rather than large amounts at once, and advance your diet slowly with bland foods as the nausea eases. If you cannot keep any fluids down, are not urinating, or feel dizzy or faint, that is a sign to seek in-person care.
Nausea, dehydration, and staying hydrated through a Michigan winter
Vomiting and diarrhea cost you fluids fast. In Michigan's cold, dry winter months you may not feel thirsty even as you lose fluids, and indoor heating dries you out further — so it is easy to under-drink while you are sick. That makes steady rehydration especially important. Take small, frequent sips of clear fluids or an oral rehydration solution, rest while you recover, and watch for dizziness, a dry mouth, dark urine, or passing very little urine. If you cannot keep any fluids down or feel faint, that is a sign to seek in-person care rather than wait.
What if symptoms don't go away?
