The most effective approach is prevention — taking medication before travel rather than waiting until symptoms start.
How online motion-sickness prescriptions work in Pennsylvania

When to see a doctor in person
Online care is prevention for travel — it is not the right path for every symptom. Seek in-person care if any of the following apply.
- Dizziness or vertigo even when you are not moving
- New one-sided hearing loss or ringing in one ear
- Severe headache, or changes in vision, speech, or weakness
- Symptoms that persist after your trip ends
- Narrow-angle glaucoma, which makes these medications unsuitable
First-line options: the patch and promethazine
For preventing motion sickness during travel, clinicians commonly consider the scopolamine transdermal patch or oral promethazine. The scopolamine patch is applied behind the ear about 4 hours before travel; wash your hands after handling it, and one patch can last up to 3 days. Oral promethazine is typically taken as a first dose 30 to 60 minutes before travel. Your clinician chooses the option and timing based on your trip, your age, your other medications, and any allergies.
These medicines can cause drowsiness, dry mouth, or blurred vision. Do not drive, operate machinery, or drink alcohol until you know how they affect you. Because this care is prevention taken before the trip, having the prescription ready ahead of time matters — it is not treatment of an ongoing illness.
What makes motion sickness worse?
Anything that widens the gap between what your inner ear feels and what your eyes see tends to make motion sickness worse: reading or using a screen while in motion, sitting where you cannot see the horizon, and travel by sea or cruise, winding roads, or turbulent flights. A prior history of motion sickness and a history of migraine both raise the likelihood. Simple measures like facing forward, looking at the horizon, and good airflow can help, but they are often not enough on their own, which is where prescription prevention comes in.
What if symptoms continue after the trip?
Motion sickness should ease once the motion stops. If you have dizziness or vertigo when you are not traveling, new or one-sided hearing changes, or other neurologic symptoms, those point to a cause other than motion sickness and deserve an in-person evaluation — for example with an ENT or your primary care provider. Is online motion sickness treatment legal in Pennsylvania?
Yes. Pennsylvania's Telemedicine Act — Act 42 of 2024 (SB 739) — lets licensed clinicians evaluate patients and prescribe non-controlled medications by telemedicine. The scopolamine patch and promethazine are non-controlled, so a Pennsylvania-licensed clinician can review your case and prescribe online without an in-person visit. Controlled substances still require an in-person visit.
