Common Reasons to Delay

When you'd rather not have a period.

Period delay is elective. People ask for it when a period would land on an important date — a short course of norethindrone can postpone it.

A wedding or honeymoon
A vacation or trip
An athletic event or competition
An exam or important work trip
A religious observance
A surgery or medical procedure
When Period Delay Isn't Right For You — See a Clinician In Person:

You are or could be pregnant; you have a history of blood clots (DVT/PE) or a clotting disorder; you have had breast or another hormone-sensitive cancer; you have active liver disease; you have undiagnosed abnormal vaginal bleeding; or you have a history of stroke, heart attack, or artery disease. Migraine with aura and smoking over age 35 also need a closer look. The clinician reviews your history and will recommend in-person care when that is safer.

Important: Period delay is an elective service for people assigned female at birth. The information above is for educational purposes only and is not medical advice. A licensed clinician decides whether a short course of progestin is appropriate for you.

Clinical Guide

What to know before delaying your period.

Online period delay is for people who want to postpone an upcoming period and have no contraindications to progestin. Vyta.co screens your timing and health history and prescribes only when a licensed physician determines it is appropriate.

Medically reviewed by Dr. John Venzor, licensed physician. Last reviewed June 5, 2026. This section is educational and does not replace individualized medical advice.

How period delay works

Your period starts when the lining of the uterus sheds, which happens as progesterone drops at the end of your cycle. Norethindrone is an oral progestin that keeps that hormone level up, so the lining stays in place and bleeding is postponed. You take it on a fixed schedule starting a few days before your period is due and continue daily until you no longer need the delay. After you stop, your period usually arrives within 2 to 3 days. It does not work like a "morning after" fix — it has to be started before bleeding begins.

How online period delay prescriptions work

You complete a secure online assessment with your expected period date, how long you want to delay, your health history, medications, allergies, and pharmacy preference. A licensed physician reviews the information and may follow up if more detail is needed. If there are no safety concerns and there is enough lead time, the clinician can send an electronic prescription for norethindrone to your selected pharmacy for same-day pickup in most cases.

Vyta.co does not automatically prescribe. If your answers suggest pregnancy, a history of blood clots, a hormone-sensitive cancer, liver disease, undiagnosed abnormal bleeding, or cardiovascular disease, the clinician will recommend in-person care instead.

When to start and how long it lasts

Start norethindrone about 3 days before your period is expected. Cycles that are regular and predictable make the timing easiest, which is why the intake asks about that. You can typically delay for a couple of weeks; longer delays are possible but make breakthrough spotting more likely.

Because the medication has to begin before bleeding starts, period delay only works with a little lead time. If your period has already started, this cycle has passed.

When period delay is not appropriate

Short-course progestin is not right for everyone. Seek in-person care, or expect the clinician to decline, if any of the following apply.

  • Pregnancy or possible pregnancy
  • History of blood clots (DVT/PE) or a clotting disorder, or a prior stroke, heart attack, or artery disease
  • Current or past breast or other hormone-sensitive cancer, active liver disease, or undiagnosed abnormal vaginal bleeding

What to expect and possible side effects

Norethindrone for period delay is usually taken as 5 mg three times a day. Most people tolerate a short course well. The most common effect is light breakthrough spotting, which is more likely the longer you delay. Some people notice nausea, bloating, breast tenderness, or headache. These are generally mild and stop after the medication is finished.

Stop the medication and seek care promptly for warning signs of a clot or vascular event — a new severe headache, leg swelling or pain, chest pain, or shortness of breath. Your clinician chooses the regimen and duration based on your timing, health history, and any medications you take.

Period delay vs. your birth control

If you already take a combined (estrogen-progestin) birth control pill, you may be able to skip your usual pill-free or placebo week and start the next pack instead — that often delays a period without a separate prescription. Norethindrone for delay is most useful for people who are not on a combined pill, or who prefer not to change their regimen. Note your current contraception in the intake so the clinician can advise the simplest approach for you.

Is delaying a period safe?

For most healthy people without the contraindications above, occasionally postponing a period with a short progestin course is considered safe. It does not affect long-term fertility, and normal cycles resume once you stop. If you find yourself wanting to delay frequently, or your cycles are irregular, that is worth a fuller evaluation with a primary care clinician or OB-GYN.

Norethindrone is an oral progestin. Taken on a short schedule starting about 3 days before your period is due, it keeps the uterine lining stable so your period is postponed. You continue it daily until you no longer need the delay, and your period usually starts 2 to 3 days after you stop.
Start ~3 days before your period
Start about 3 days before your expected period. The medication has to build up before bleeding would normally begin, so it works best with a few days of lead time. If your period has already started, or starts within the next 3 days, it is too late for this cycle.
A little lead time is needed
$39 covers the online consultation. If a prescription is appropriate, that is all you pay for the visit — no hidden fees, no subscription. Medication is paid separately at the pharmacy, typically $10–$25 for generic norethindrone. If a clinician determines treatment is not appropriate, there is no charge.
No charge if treatment is not appropriate
Period delay with progestin is not appropriate if you are or could be pregnant, have a history of blood clots or a clotting disorder, have had breast or another hormone-sensitive cancer, have active liver disease, have undiagnosed abnormal vaginal bleeding, or have a history of stroke, heart attack, or artery disease. The clinician reviews your history and will recommend in-person care if it is safer for you.
