What is tretinoin?
Tretinoin is a prescription-strength topical retinoid, a derivative of vitamin A. It speeds the turnover of skin cells, helps keep pores from clogging, and stimulates collagen in the deeper layers of the skin. Those effects are why the same medication treats both acne and the visible signs of aging — fine lines, uneven texture, and dark spots. Tretinoin has decades of clinical evidence behind it. It is applied as a thin layer at night, and results build gradually over weeks to months of consistent use.
How online tretinoin prescriptions work
You complete a secure online skin assessment describing your skin, your goals, your medications and allergies, your pregnancy status, and any prior retinoid use. A licensed physician reviews the information and may follow up if more detail is needed. If tretinoin is appropriate, the clinician selects a starting strength and your prescription is filled by a U.S. pharmacy and shipped discreetly to your door.
Vyta.co does not automatically prescribe. If your answers suggest pregnancy or breastfeeding, current isotretinoin use, a retinoid allergy, severe or scarring acne, or another complicating factor, the clinician may recommend in-person care instead.

How to use tretinoin
Apply a pea-sized amount to clean, dry skin at night, starting about 2 to 3 nights a week and increasing as your skin tolerates it. Some dryness, peeling, or a temporary purge in the first few weeks is normal as your skin adjusts — this is called retinization. Avoid the eyes, nostrils, and lips.
Wear a broad-spectrum sunscreen every morning, because tretinoin increases sun sensitivity. If you use benzoyl peroxide, apply it at a different time of day. Visible results typically take about 8 to 12 weeks.
When to see a clinician in person
See a clinician in person instead of starting tretinoin online if any of these apply.
- You are pregnant, breastfeeding, or trying to conceive (tretinoin is not safe in pregnancy)
- You currently take oral isotretinoin (Accutane)
- You have a known allergy to tretinoin or other retinoids
- You have severe cystic or nodular acne, or significant acne scarring
- You have an active eczema or rosacea flare, or sunburn, on the treatment area
- You notice signs of skin infection, or a new, changing, or suspicious mole or lesion
Tretinoin strengths
Tretinoin cream comes in 0.025%, 0.05%, and 0.1%. The strength is a clinical decision based on your skin and experience, not a price tier — the price is the same for every strength. Most new users start at 0.025% and titrate up as tolerated. Higher strengths can work faster but tend to cause more dryness and irritation, so your clinician chooses a starting point that balances results and comfort.
Acne and anti-aging
Tretinoin treats both. For acne, it normalizes how skin cells shed so pores are less likely to clog, reducing blackheads, whiteheads, and inflamed breakouts. For aging, it stimulates collagen and evens out pigment, softening fine lines, rough texture, and dark spots over time. It is the same medication, tailored by your clinician to your primary skin goals.
What to expect over time
Improvement is gradual, not overnight. Expect an adjustment period in the first few weeks, early changes by around 6 to 8 weeks, and fuller results by 12 weeks and beyond with consistent nightly use. Tretinoin is a long-term skincare tool — benefits continue with ongoing use, paired with a daily broad-spectrum sunscreen.
